Balance is Active

Do you want to find more “balance” in your life? You’re not alone….
But most of us are forgetting that balance is active!

If you want proof, I dare you to balance on one foot for 2 minutes.

A lot of us are treating balance like a noun- like it’s a thing we can find in the scavenger hunt of life, and then once we “find”  it, it’s ours forever.

(I don’t know about you but I don’t know anyone who has won that scavenger hunt.)

Or we picture it like it’s a scale that once it’s balanced it just…remains balanced, which is true for a scale IF the conditions don’t change.

But in our lives- we are the scale.  We are organic ever-changing beings with ever-changing circumstances. The things we are balancing are in a state of constant motion and change, and in all dimensions

Instead of thinking about balance like a noun or a scale, let’s start treating balance like the action or verb that it is, the way a ballerina or gymnast has to.

To balance is to constantly be seeking balance, seeking stability, seeking center.

It’s an active fight to stay upright and not be pulled too far in one direction, and then not overcorrect too far in the other.

Getting “good balance” takes strength, and practice, and implies there will be moments of suspense and wobble.

And once we get quite good at balancing and can hold on to our center pretty well…we are constantly making tiny adjustments to maintain this center.

And even when we feel completely balanced, we can’t stay here forever! Eventually, the muscles to stay upright will fatigue and we have to re-adapt, readjust, restabilize.

So even at our most balanced,  are never fully balanced, we are always balancING.

The wobbles are always there, it’s just a matter of how big or small they are.

So keep this in mind in your life. If it feels hard to maintain balance… you’re correct. But it is a worthwhile fight.

If you’re in a season of life where you are falling to one side,  that’s okay!

Try, if you can, to add just a little counter-weight to keep you on your feet, even if you’re not fully upright. That’s still balancing!

Ask, what’s one small thing can I add, subtract, or adjust that will move me a little more toward center today?

-Work taking over your whole life and your friends aren’t getting any attention? Send a “check-in” text to your friend when you eat dinner.

Are you a caretaker with 0 time for yourself? What’s the one thing that makes you feel like YOU? Can you do it for 2 minutes

So know that we are never fully balanced. Everything is a season. And

Fight the good fight, know wobbles are inevitable.
