Confessions of a Habit Coach: The Truth About My Daily Routine

The Truth About My Daily Routine

True confession time: As someone who helps others build habits, people will sometimes assume habit formation is easy for me, and I have a locked-in daily routine.

…Nope…

In fact I still quietly “guffaw” when I’m described as “put together or organized.”

Habit formation definitely comes easier to some than it does for others...I don’t believe it comes easy to me…That’s why I’ve needed to (and continue to) deep-dive and find as many habit formations and tools as possible!

While I’ve worked hard to lock-in a few key habits for myself that fit my values and desired identity…

There are definitely habits and practices I wish I had locked-in, but for sure, DON’T!

Like...

-waking up before 9 am

-meditating

-taking my vitamins

-eating lunch before 4:30 pm

-establishing consistent work hours

-writing/posting consistently

-reaching out (to friends and for networking purposes)

-budgeting/saving $$

-showering daily…?

-working out at the same times each week

-leaving my house calmly and on-time instead of rushing out the door.

But here’s what I DO have intentionally locked-in:

-Singing each weekday evening

-Listening to informational podcasts and audiobooks while doing dishes

-Reading on the subway

-Cooking/eating home cooked dinners

-Making my bed

-Journaling each morning while the coffee brews

-Daily gratitude

-Naming my “wins,”

-Weekly/monthly reflections and goal-setting

Here’s what ELSE I have locked-in: My habit building process.

And the knowledge that habit formation takes time;

-it takes planning and specificity;

-It takes a growth-mindset;

-It takes grit (passion + persistence);

-it takes increased self-awareness;

-it takes support from others

-it takes experimentation

...which by definition means…

-it takes some failure;

-and it works best if you focus on one thing at a time.

My daily routine isn’t exactly where I want it to be yet, but it means I’ve tried LOTS of things and continue to try lots of things! And I know there isn’t a one-size-fits all way to get to where you want to be.  It means I’ll always have more to learn, and therefore, more to share with you!

So you might be out there looking for a true habit master who can unlock all the secrets and give you the “Get-your-life-together-quick-fix.”  ...I am not that person…(I don’t believe that person exists..)

But if you're down for a long and slightly bumpy, but joyful, supported, self-validating, exploratory journey...join me and the fellow 10-Minutes-A-Day Club members!
