(Simply) Start
Make it stand out
Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
Starting is the hardest part for me. Always.
Starting to write. Starting the workout. Starting the tedious task. Starting my taxes….(the current battle).
Especially if whatever I’m starting is new to me: If I don’t already know how to do it, or I don’t know how long it will take, or the idea isn’t fully formed yet… starting feels like pulling teeth.
The lesson I have to keep learning is that once I start, I’ve already done the hardest part.
Actually, I think the moments before walking up to the starting block are the hardest.
Thinking about the ‘doing’ is harder— at least emotionally.
I prepare for all the ways “doing” will be difficult or out of my comfort zone. What if it doesn’t go well?
To prepare for these hardships (I tell myself) II must be zoned in to do my best work. And to be zoned on I need the create the perfect zone-in conditions….So I spend all day creating the perfect zone in conditions without actually zoning in.
But “doing” is easier.
You’ve got a little momentum. The breadcrumbs appear, or you know where to look for them. You’re not worried about what you’re putting off.
Once you “start” the thing, you “do” the next thing.
“But what if it goes wrong?”
…It won’t go at all (which might be worse) if we don’t get started.
The key to starting, I’ve found, is starting as simply as possible.
-Start with the smallest possible step.
-Start with 10 minutes- set a timer and give yourself permission to stop after it’s up.
-Start in your PJs
-Start while your listening to your favorite album or watching your favorite sitcom.
Make “starting” fun, light, simple.
The magic you have to offer is on the other end of starting. Stop hoarding your magic.
Reduce the time and steps between…
“thinking about planning to be almost ready to start thinking about starting…”
And…doing.
Do it by starting. Simply starting.
(By starting simply).
